Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Minimally invasive spine surgery treats spine conditions through smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, using specialized instruments and imaging to reach the problem while disturbing less muscle and tissue. For the right patient, that can mean less pain after surgery, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to normal activity.

Conservative care comes first

Surgery is recommended only after conservative options have been considered, and always with a clear explanation of why, what's involved, and what recovery looks like. Most patients with back or neck pain improve with physical medicine, therapy, and interventional pain treatment, and many of our surgical consultations end with a non-surgical plan.

Surgery is usually considered when nerve compression is causing progressive weakness or numbness, when pain has not responded to several months of conservative treatment, or when imaging shows instability or spinal cord compression that puts function at risk. Because Dr. Oni-Orisan works alongside the practice's pain and neurology physicians, your history, imaging, and test results are already in one place when you meet him.

Spine procedures

Minimally invasive decompression

Laminectomy, discectomy, and foraminotomy remove the bone or disc material pressing on a nerve or the spinal cord.

Cervical and lumbar fusion

Joins two or more vertebrae so they heal as one, to stabilize a segment that is unstable or causing pain.

Artificial disc replacement

Replaces a damaged disc with an implant designed to preserve motion at that level, as an alternative to fusion for selected patients.

Brain and cerebrovascular neurosurgery

Dr. Oni-Orisan's fellowship training is in open cerebrovascular, skull base, and neuro-endovascular surgery. In addition to spine care, he evaluates and treats brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid disease, acoustic neuromas, skull base tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, Chiari malformation, and traumatic brain injury.

What to expect at your consultation

Bring any MRI, CT, or X-ray images and reports, a list of treatments you've tried, and your medications. Dr. Oni-Orisan will examine you, review the images with you, and explain whether surgery is likely to help, what the options are, and what recovery would involve. If surgery isn't the right answer, he'll coordinate with the rest of the team on a conservative plan.
